Description:

Zefretol 400 Tablet is a prescription medicine used to treat epilepsy (seizures). It helps to decrease the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells and calms the brain.

Zefretol 400 Tablet may be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time, each day. Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Do not stop taking it abruptly without discussing it with your doctor, as it may increase seizure frequency.

Some of the common side effects of this medicine include blurred or double vision, headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, rash, and diarrhea. It may also cause dizziness and sleepiness, do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you.  Please consult your doctor if these side effects bother you or do not go away.

Your doctor may advice for regular monitoring of sodium levels, as it may reduce the sodium levels in your blood (hyponatremia). Inform your doctor if you are taking oral contraceptive pills as this medicine reduces their levels in the body.

Directions For Use:

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Zefretol 400 Tablet may be taken with or without food.

Pregnancy

Zefretol 400 Tablet is not recommended during pregnancy as there is positive evidence of fetal risk based on animal studies. However, it may still be prescribed by a doctor in situations where the benefits outweigh the risks.
Breast feeding
CAUTION
Zefretol 400 Tablet should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be held until the treatment of the mother is completed and the drug is eliminated from the body.
Driving
UNSAFE
Zefretol 400 Tablet may decrease alertness, affect your vision, or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur.
Kidney
CAUTION
Zefretol 400 Tablet should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment may be needed.
Employ of Zefretol 400 Tablet is not recommended in patients with severe kidney disease.
Liver
CAUTION
Zefretol 400 Tablet should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment may be needed.

Can I stop taking if I start feeling better?

No, stopping Zefretol 400 Tablet suddenly can increase your risk of having more seizures. Your doctor will advise you on how long you should take this medicine. If your doctor decides to stop Zefretol 400 Tablet, your dose will usually be reduced gradually. It is important that you complete your treatment as advised by your doctor or your symptoms may get worse.

Can Zefretol 400 Tablet cause suicidal thoughts?

Like all other anti-epileptic medicines, Zefretol 400 Tablet may also cause suicidal thoughts. However, this occurs only in a small number of people.

Can Zefretol 400 Tablet be taken if I have kidney-related problems?

Inform your doctor if you are suffering from any kidney-related problems. Your doctor will monitor your kidney function (creatinine clearance) regularly and may adjust your dose of Zefretol 400 Tablet accordingly.

Zefretol 400 Tablet may cause allergic reactions or serious problems that may impact organs and other parts of your body like the liver or blood cells. Consult your doctor straight away if you develop rashes, hives, itchiness, swelling, trouble swallowing or difficulty in breathing.

Can I participate in sports when taking Zefretol 400 Tablet?

How will I know that my sodium levels are low while taking Zefretol 400 Tablet?

If your blood sodium levels become low during the course of Zefretol 400 Tablet, you may experience worsening of seizures, confusion and decreased consciousness. Immediately consult your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms.

Can Zefretol 400 Tablet be taken with Carbamazepine?

The dose of Zefretol 400 Tablet may need to be adjusted if you take Carbamazepine with Zefretol 400 Tablet. The reason being, Carbamazepine interferes with its working.
